Earlier this year, I wrote about how mobile companies are innovating with new methods of communication to their players. Mobile app developers are able to connect with their users easier than ever before! So I wanted to know: How do the players themselves feel about that? I polled 2000 users of Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff get their opinion on how mobile companies provide help & support.

1. Players rely on each other more than developers

When asked how they look for mobile game help, a staggering majority said that they check online communities first. This points to an ironic fact: Mobile gaming companies are not the authority on their own games. Players instinctively search community forums and player-to-player resources for answers, because they feel that?s where the best database exists. The easiest way to keep that traffic in your app is to provide an excellent FAQ that keeps players informed.

Mobile Stats That Will Raise Your Eyebrows

eMarketer and Akamai just released the report “eMarketer Roundup: Providing a Seamless Consumer Experience,” a detailed whitepaper on:

  • The increasing use of mobile (we knew this was happening, but the numbers are shocking)
  • The rise in need for a “seamless” buyer experience, both online and offline
  • The need for more structured marketing data.

The stats that made us shiver?

eMarketer estimates that among U.S. adults, almost half (46%) of all media time in 2014 was spent with digital, up from 23% in 2010. Mobile specifically has grown from 3.7% of the total to 22.9%, in the same time. Of course, the up-and-coming generations are increasingly glued to their devices, too, with 90% admitting to having their device at all times and 80% saying it’s the first thing they touch when they wake up.

How Smartphones Are Changing How Thumbs and Brains Communicate


Smartphone Use - Thumbs and BrainOpposable thumbs gave ancient humans a huge evolutionary advantage by allowing for use of tools. More recently, these thumbs also allow for people to quickly type on screens of smartphones and other touchscreen devices. A new study has found that this recent widespread mode of communication is actually changing the way thumbs and the brain talk to one another, demonstrating the plasticity of the human brain. Arko Ghosh of the University of Zurich is lead author of the paper, which has been published in Current Biology.

In 2015: Multiple Mobile Apps On One Screen

One of the best features on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 I bought in 2012 is surprisingly still fairly scarce on other devices. The 5.5-inch phone gained the ability to run two apps on the screen at one time thanks to a software update. Samsung has since used this function on many of its larger phones and tablets; I can see why since it’s so useful.

Few other companies have followed suit here, which is a bit baffling, particularly since phones are getting larger displays which are perfectly suited for this type multitasking. Some companies are slowly coming around though.

Acer’s latest Iconia Tab 8, for example, has a split-screen mode according to Liliputing. This lets you choose from a selection of apps that can run in a half-window, similar to how Samsung’s implementation works. Traditionally many designers, developers and clients tackle the desktop side of a website first; saving mobile as an afterthought, or maybe as a phase two that never happens. However in the past few years, a new philosophy has been introduced, that being designing “mobile first.” I first heard the concept of designing mobile first back in 2013, when our team headed down to South Carolina for the ConvergeSE conference. It was actually first coined by Luke Wroblewski years before that, when he began to notice an upswing of mobile web usage. The statistics are truly staggering. Of the almost 7.3 billion people inhabiting Earth right now, 48.9% use mobile internet. We are headed for a time where businesses need to put an emphasis on the mobile side, rather than relegating it to phase two.
